Its acquisition of the Fremont, California-based company is a direct consequence of Cisco System’s $30m purchase in October of Orative Corp, which had been Avaya’s long-term partner.

Traverse’s server software and mobile handset interface offers call-handling applications and voicemail management to mobile devices. This enables users to see and hear office voicemail through an email-like inbox on a mobile device.

Apart from voicemail, users have access to corporate phone directories, enterprise call management functions, and caller ID. The system is designed to extend enterprise communications to a range of devices including RIM Blackberry and Palm handhelds, and J2ME-enabled mobile phones.

Eileen Rudden, general manager of Avaya’s unified communications division, said the addition of Traverse technology helps to extend intelligent communications to the edge of the enterprise and will enable Avaya to support simplified employee collaboration and more productive use of communications.
