Proving itself an attractive alternative to IBM Personals in specialised applications, Apple’s Macintosh has also won over Billerica, Massachusetts-based industrial automation systems specialist Automatix Inc, which is shipping an industrial control computer based on the Mac II in the US. Called the AI90 in Automatix colours, it was chosen for the ease of use of the Mac’s graphics interface. The AI90 is a stand-alone industrial computer to be tailored to specific factory control applications; at $10,000 to $14,000, 35 or so have gone so far.
