The Australian Labor Party Opposition has accused Government Finance Minister John Fahey of concealing the seriousness of Year 2000 compliance problems from the public. Opposition Finance spokesman Bob McMullan has called on the Government to table the confidential quarterly Y2K reports which are submitted to Cabinet by the Office of Government Information Technology (OGIT.) The reports deal with the progress of Government bodies toward Y2K compliance. The furore follows remarks made earlier this week by Graeme Inchley, chief executive of the government’s Year 2000 National Strategy Committee, when he said it was already too late for some parts of Government to make the Year 2000 deadline.
