AT&T Wireless is currently converting its TDMA network infrastructure to support the world’s most widespread mobile standard, GSM. As well as allowing subscribers to use their handsets in GSM markets abroad, the switch allows AT&T to implement high-speed GPRS services at home. Its GPRS subscribers will also be able to use the service abroad.
The company has also started to deploy a compression technology called adaptive multirate vocorder (AMR), which should substantially increase the GSM network’s voice capacity.
