AT&T’s Unix System Laboratories is to make a number of Unix announcements on September 18, most important of will to be the multiprocessing extensions that are to be incorporated into Unix System V.4, promised as part of Unix International’s five-year plan for the operating system known as the Road Map. Although front-runners for supplying the technology, such as Pyramid Technology Inc, Silicon Graphics, NCR and the joint Intel-Olivetti-Unisys effort, declared themselves back in June, other hopefuls include Unisoft and Carnegie-Mellon University with Mach – the announcement was postponed by Unix Labs until after the summer break and its own metamorphosis. Although the extensions are unlikely to be available until mid-1992, early access programme members will get them sooner.
