AT&T TALKS ABOUT THE NEXT GENERATION TELEPHONE

By CBR Staff Writer

AT&T Co has been talking about what it hopes will be the next generation telephone following trials it wants to start in 1992: the SmartPhone has a built-in modem and uses a 6.5 by 4 touch-screen display for dialling and for calling up a range of information services or initiating services like call waiting and voice mail; it also includes a simple electronic filing system that enables users to build up a personal classified phone directory, and can take messages and return a call at the touch of a button; AT&T reckons it will sell for $200 to $300, but sees it being distributed primarily by service and information providers – such as home banking service operators.
