AT&T-SBC MERGER RUMORS GROW

By CBR Staff Writer

Does Ma Bell want to devour one of her babies? Rumors are growing of a mega-merger between AT&T Corp and SBC Communications Corp – a bid that could give industry regulators nightmares, as they are already grappling with the consequences of WorldCom Inc’s proposed merger with MCI Corp. I wouldn’t say it’s a dead deal either, but I don’t see how it can happen anytime soon, said Robert Wilkes, telecommunications analyst at Brown Brothers Harriman. Sure MCI/WorldCom is $37bn but AT&T/SBC would be what – $75bn? Can they sell that in Washington? It’s probably a little premature to think that that could happen.
