AT&T RUMINATES ON PACIFIC RIM FIBRE-OPTICS

By CBR Staff Writer

AT&T Corp has rallied Telefonica de Espana SA and 11 carriers in Central and South America to study the feasibility of installing a Pacific Ocean fibre-optic cable system down the west coast of the Americas: total investment for the system is projected to be $500m and the target date for completion is 1997; the 6,875 mile system, tentatively called the Pan American Cable System, would link Chile with the US and would have multiple landing points along the route; it would have two fibre pairs operating at 622Mbps, providing capacity equivalent to 90,000 simultaneous calls.
