AT&T Co says it plans to provide digital satellite private-line service to Peking and Shanghai from March: the Skynet International service will support voice, data and video and will go by Intelsat: it represents the first phase of a two-part, $70m digital network project jointly undertaken by AT&T, Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co of Japan and China’s Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications; the aim is to ease the long-existing business communications bottleneck between China and the rest of the world, and make new services possible.
