AT&T Corp is proposing a fibre-optic undersea loop connecting the nations of Africa with each other and with the rest of the world: the proposed network would be based on a cable system around the continent 20,000 miles long with cable-landing points in all African nations with a coastline, while nations in the continent’s interior would be linked to the system via satellite, microwave radio, cellular and ground communications, AT&T said – and the system, to be called Africa One, would be operated by African authorities to assure that the revenues generated by the system remain in Africa, AT&T promised.
