AT&T Corp’s Largo, Florida-based AT&T-Paradyne claims to have perfected data compression and transmission technology within its GlobeSpan system to enable two-way television signals to be sent over ordinary copper phone lines at from 1.54Mbps to 2.05Mbps, adding that it will be available in December. The announcement met with some scepticism as house-to-house differences in quality and carrying capacity of existing copper wiring could foul the system.
