Following its agreement with Stratacom Inc and Cisco Systems Inc (see front), AT&T Co says it will offer two new switches in its initial launch of Asynchronous Transfer Mode services: the next-generation GCNS-2000, will support 20Gbps switching capacity, enabling Asynchronous Transfer applications to be brought to public telephone networks and will be available on a limited basis at the end of 1993, and generally available six months later; the second is StrataCom’s BPX, which will be used as an edge vehicle; the broadband BPX is designed for use in both public and private network and is fully compatible with Stratacom’s narrowband IPX switch; the BPX will be available in the fourth quarter of 1993 and it will start at under $75,000 when used as a trunk switch; a BPX service node with both Asynchronous Transfer Mode and Frame Relay functionality will be around $250,000.
