AT&T Istel Computer Systems Ltd has announced UK availability of its StarServer E Symmetric Multiprocessor running under Unix System V Release 4.0 Version 3. AT&T says that it is the most powerful member of its Work Group systems product family and it can accommodate up to four central processing units based on the 33MHz 80486 chip. Also, the StarServer E accepts additional processors, but it is said to avoid the bottlenecks usually associated with these architectures. Users can start with one processor performing at 26.5 MIPS and grow into the four processors executing at 106 MIPS. Up to 4Gb of disk storage can be configured in one cabinet and additional cabinets can take that up to 46Gb depending on configuration, the systems cost between UKP20,625 and UKP24,875. Also, AT&T Istel has reduced the price of its StarServer S range by 20%. Based on the 80486 chip and EISA bus, a StarServer S performs at up to 26.5 MIPS and supports both Unix System V.3.2.3 and System V.4. With immediate effect, the systems are between UKP8,996 and UKP10,496.
