AT&T Co heads up a consortium including Cable & Wireless Plc, Telefonica Larga Distancia of Puerto Rico, and US Sprint Communications Co that intends to build one of the world’s largest capacity undersea fibre optic systems in the Caribbean: the $17m, 112-mile Taino-Carib system will link Puerto Rico, St Thomas and Tortola: it will have six fibre pairs, each operating at 560Mbps for capacity of 225,000 calls; it is set for the autumn.
