AT&T Co likes to keep track of these things and keep us all in the picture and it reports that its long distance network handled a record number of calls as Hurricane Andrew hit southern Florida and the US Gulf Coast: it says it handled 563.5m calls during the Sunday to Wednesday period last week, making it the busiest disaster-related surge ever logged by the company for long distance usage; calling into and out of South Florida and Louisiana ran as high as 500% above normal at the height of the storm and it was still running about 35% above normal on Thursday AT&T said.
