AT&T Network System’s 5ESS exchange will have a new generation of wireless features in 1994 that will enable telephone companies and other switch owners to offer cellular telephone service and eventually personal communications networks using the 5ESS Switch: the announcement is claimed to signal AT&T’s intention to expand its cellular systems business as global wireless communications markets develop in the 1990s; the new wireless capabilities will be compatible with CTIA standards in the US and GSM standards here in Europe.
