AT&T Corp has signed one of those contracts that the Australian government demands if high technology companies want to bid on equal terms with locals on public contracts: AT&T will invest some $75m over the next four years building an advanced cable-making plant – fibre optic presumably, do research and enter partnerships with Australian firms: it will open a research centre in Australia to do software for the local and export markets and supply digital switches for mobile phones to Australia’s second telecommunications network operated by Optus Communications Pty Ltd.
