AT&T Co cut long distance prices for residential and small business customers by $83.4m, $49.5m more than it filed for on December 18: the additional cuts followed an order from the Federal Communications Commission that deferred proposed increases in the amounts AT&T will be assessed this year for federally-managed programmes that subsidise local telephone companies in high-cost areas and low-income telephone subscribers – but the cut is no big deal, representing just 8 cents on the average monthly bill of $16 – but AT&T says that it has cut prices more than 40% overall since Bell System break-up in 1984.
