By CBR Staff Writer

AT&T Bell Laboratories has opened an 800-strong unit in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania to concentrate on photonic products at its Solid State Technology Center: it will develop electronic and photonic devices for telecommunications – laser transmitters and receivers for the second transatlantic fibre optic cable set for 1991; photonic components for systems to carry high-bandwidth services into homes, and work on very fast optical switches for lightwave communications.
