AT&T BELL LABORATORIES AND ARGONNE NATIONAL LABORATORY EACH CLAIMS IT HAS FABRICATED A SUPERCONDUCTING CERAMIC INTO A WIRE

By CBR Staff Writer

AT&T Bell Laboratories and Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois each claims to have duplicated Toshiba’s feat of fabricating a superconducting ceramic into a wire, but the problem of creating wires with high current capacity has not yet been solved, so that electrical transmission applications are likely to be some way off; several labs have however also created films a few atoms thick which suggests that use of superconductors for interconnection of semiconductor components may be an early application.
