AT&T has announced an addition to its Systimax Premises Distribution System, PDS, which is designed to enable users to plug virtually any voice or data terminal on a local area network into a standard outlet: the new Systimax 2061 unshielded twisted pair cable supports local network applications at speeds of up to 20Mbps and can tie together 104 Token Ring workstations over distances of up to 100 yards from a wiring closet without the use of signal amplifiers – AT&T says users of its StarLAN 10 can use the new cable to extend the distances between workstations and wiring closets to 150 yards; no price was given for the 2061 cable, which is available in the US from next week.
