ATRIUM SETS DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING ENVIRONMENT CODE

By CBR Staff Writer

Atrium Technologies Inc, the Austin, Texas, start-up established by Tivoli Systems Inc founder Bob Fabbio, is going to preview its never-before-seen software packages this week at ComNet. It has some of the first software built for the Open Software Foundation’s Distributed Computing Environment, DCE. The surprise is a thing called Distributed Access Control Manager, a generic Distributed Computing Environment ACL security manager intended to relieve users of having to construct a defence of their own out of what DCE presents them with. Atrium says the Distributed Computing Environment technologies are too primitive and low-level for users to work with. The second program is the expected Dazel which will deliver information to facsimile machines, printers, electronic mail, speech and pagers within the context of the network. Dazel is said to support PostScript, SGML, SPDL, PCL, ASCII and MIF with other protocols to come. The software will run on Sun Microsystems Inc boxes and Transarc Inc’s implementation of Distributed Computing Environment, with Hewlett-Packard Co and IBM Corp hardware to follow. Dazel will sell for $5,000 for a server, $700 for a client and Distributed Access Control Manager for $2,000 for a server and $200 for a client. Deliveries are said to be on schedule for June. Dazel is expected to announce some big-name customer wins.
