Atmel unveils Wi-Fi SoC and controller for IoT devices

The WILC3000 wireless link controller provides energy-efficient apps for the Internet of Things.

By Amy-Jo Crowley

Atmel is looking to make Internet of Things (IoT) applications more energy-efficient, with the release of a wireless combo system-on-chip and network controller.

The WILC3000 wireless link controller is integrated with Wi-Fi 802.11n and Bluetooth connectivity in a Wafer Level Chip Scale Package (WLCSP), which measures 4.1mm X 4.1mm.

The San Jose-based company claims the controller is ideal for IoT and wearable applications due to its low energy consumption and patented adaptive co-existence engine.

Atmel, which agreed to buy Wi-Fi provider Newport Media in July 2014, has also introduced the WINC3400 network controller, which is designed to pair with any Atmel AVR or MCU.

The network controller also includes an On-Chip Network Stack to minimise host CPU requirements, while other network features include TCP, UDP, DHCP, ARP, HTTP, SSL, and DNS.

Atmel says that both products combined will provide up to 72 Mbps throughput and allow for a broad range of use cases in the IoT space.

"IoT requires a diverse portfolio of wireless MPUs and MCUs with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities that will enable cloud access," said Atmel’s general manager of Wireless MCUs Kaivan Karimi.
