Asynchronous Transfer Mode is not dead, according to a report from US market research firm Communications Industry Researchers Inc. It has been transformed, the report suggests, into a backbone and multiservices product, rather than a technology originally positioned to dominate the whole of enterprise networking. Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet are bad news for the ATM workgroup market, it says, but good for those selling ATM uplinks from LAN switches and routers.
