On Friday and Saturday the city of Atlanta, Georgia, still reeling from Networld+Interop, played host to the Atlanta Linux Showcase (ALS), a trade show entirely dedicated to the open source operating system and buzzword du jour. The Atlanta Linux Enthusiasts (ALE) group, which organizes the annual event, has rounded up the usual suspects: Caldera, Red Hat, SuSE, VA Research, Cobalt, Corel, Informix, Oracle and Sun each paid up for a booth, while Larry Augustin, Lars Wirzenius, Richard Stallman and Eric Raymond were listed as speakers. No sign of the eponymous Finn, Linus Torvalds, who is presumably bunkered down with his most trusted lieutenants working on the final release of the next stable version of Linux, 2.2 (CI No 3,522). In spite of that glaring absence, there was news to be had. Informix took the opportunity of the Atlanta Linux Showcase to reaffirm its vows to the community (see separate story). Corel announced that a special version of its Word Perfect 8 for Linux would be available for free download, while American Megatrends Inc announced that its MegaRAID controllers are now available for Red Hat Linux 5.2.
