ATI Technologies Inc has licensed the MIPS architecture from MIPS Technologies Inc, and will use it to boost the digital video capabilities of its graphics and multimedia boards. ATI, which with a 46% market share of the US graphics distribution market (according to PC Data figures) is diversifying from the graphics board business and wants to be a player in emerging markets such as set-top boxes and consumer computing devices – though still with a graphics and multimedia focus.
