ATHENS, OHIO

By CBR Staff Writer

Who said the Midwest was boring? The residents, businesses and community organisations and university groups spent last Friday and Satur-day attempting to put Athens on the map – no, not the Hellenic capital, not even Athens, Georgia, this is Athens, Ohio, where the citizenry was attempting to establish a Guinness world record for the most automatic teller machine transactions in a 24-hour period: the event was sponsored by Diebold Inc and Bank One, Athens, putting up $1 per transaction each, and the attempt was expected to raise about $2,500 for the United Appeal of Athens County – and woe betide any cashier who was on filling-up duty when the red light saying Closed came on.
