Fremont, California-based Phylon Inc has announced that Atari Corp has introduced next-generation communications for its Jaguar multimedia home entertainment system based on Phylon’s SingleCall simultaneous voice-plus-data technology. The Jaguar Voice/Data Communicator enables two players, over a single phone line, to play video games while talking or listening to each other. The Jaguar Voice/Data Communicator uses headsets, enabling players to hear each other as well as experience the stereo action of the game. Call Waiting indications, both at local and remote ends, enable gamesters to pause and resume a game in the case of interruptions. According to Atari, the first games planned to exploit the features of the Jaguar Voice/Data Communicator are Doom, Club Drive, and Iron Soldier. Future software options being planned will also enable the Jaguar to access existing and upcoming on-line services.
