AST Research Inc has launched its Premium/386 personal computer in Europe: the 20MHz machine uses a new architecture, Smartslot, that has already impressed US analysts some of whom believe it combines the benefits of IBM’s Micro Channel Architecture with the existing AT standard without leading to any compatibility problems: Smartslot is made up of a dedicated 32-bit pathway from processor to memory; the feature bus; and the arbitrated multimaster bus; AT-compatibility is provided by 16-bit data paths.
