AST Research Inc has made a major breakthrough in the People’s Republic of China with a $10m contract for 3,500 personal computers for the provincial bureaux of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Communications. A $10m contract ain’t hay in anybody’s book, but is particularly striking in the context that total sales of personal computers to China last year was only $90m, reckons International Data Corp. The deal was handled by Legend Technology Ltd, Hong Kong, majority-held by Chinese interests.
