ASPEN MARINE TO TAKE OVER IBM’s RUGGED PCRADIO

By CBR Staff Writer

Even when IBM Corp comes up with superficially sexy products, it does not seem to be able to exploit them, and nothing has been heard of its rugged, handheld 80186-based PCradio, which includes a radio modem in a basic MS-DOS handheld, since 1992 and now it sounds as if a third party is to take the thing off IBM’s hands. Coral Gables, Florida-based Aspen Marine Group Inc says it has acquired MarCom Technologies Inc, a company that has a contract with IBM, yet to be completed, to acquire the inventory, tooling, parts and exclusive right to sell, manufacture and distribute within the North American market a product equivalent to the 9075 PCradio. The MarCom version of the portable wireless communications system will include computer, facsimile, cellular phone and radio communications capabilities. Aspen paid 22.5m shares for MarCom, valuing the business at an indicated $4.9m. It hopes for $10m of business from the acquisition in the first year.
