Ashton-Tate Corp already laid off 220 employees in August ahead of its acquisition by Borland International Inc, but as soon as the acquisition is completed, Borland is expected to hand out a vast number of pink slips – as many as 700 of Ashton-Tate’s 1,300 employees are expected to receive redundancy notices; Borland says it will take a charge of as much as $80m to cover the costs of rationalisation in the wake of the $439m acquisition.
