ASCOM TO FORM CHINESE SMART CARD PAY PHONE VENTURE

Ascom Holding AG, Berne says it has completed talks on forming a joint venture with a Chinese partner to produce Smart Card pay phones. The partner is Guangzhou Telecommunications Factory, which comes under the authority of the Chinese Post & Telecommunications Ministry in Peking. Ascom will hold 51% of the new company and will have management responsibility. Initially, annual production will run at 20,000 pay telephones a year, with production expected to begin in April.
