ASCEND WINS ELECTRIC LIGHTWAVE ORDER

By CBR Staff Writer

Telecommunications operator Electric Lightwave Inc has signed a three year multi-million dollar deal with Ascend Communications Inc, for Ascend’s CBX 500 Asynchronous Transfer Mode switches, as the basis of a western US ATM network. ATM switches will be deployed in Seattle, Portland, Salt lake City, Sacramento and Phoenix. ELI claim to have chosen Ascend’s switches because they support Frame Relay, and provide an upgrade path to full ATM data services, which will include voice, video and data services. Vancouver, Canada-based ELI is a subsidiary of Citizens Utilities Co, which is the fifteenth largest independent telco in the US.
