Advanced Micro Devices’ other little victory came late Friday when Judge William Ingram said that 386 is a generic product designation and therefore cannot be trademarked, freeing AMD to call its reverse engineered version of the 80386 the Am386. Still to be heard is the issue of whether Advanced Micro has the right to copy and distribute products using Intel’s microcode.
