In another coming together of the Cray Research Inc and Digital Equipment Corp worlds – following DEC’s plans to market Cray’s new low-end Y-MP EL minisupercomputer – the Eagan, Minnesota supercomputer builder has gone to Boston Business Computing Ltd, Andover, Massachusetts for its VMS user interface-emulation family of software products for use on the full Y-MP line of supercomputers under the Unicos implementation of Unix. The suite comprises the EDT+ text editor and VCL implementation of the VMS DCL command language. The suite is sometimes described wrongly as an emulation of the VMS operating system: it fact it is simply designed to give VAX users the look and feel of VMS on alien machines. VCL also includes a Teach function to display the Unicos commands that correspond to each VMS command, and a Passthru mode that enables users to access Unicos commands while running VCL. Licences will start at $5,000.
