In the US, working with lead contractor BellSouth Corp, Fujitsu has the contract to install its Fetex-150 central Asynchronous Transfer Mode switches for Carolina Telephone in North Carolina. Currently the state, in partnership with the operating companies BellSouth and Nynex Corp, is installing a broadband ISDN public information network based on fibre optics to replace a previous system based on microwave. With the considerable increases in bandwidth and speed which the new system will provide, it is planned to increase the use of high-speed digital broadband services such as remote medical diagnosis, remote education and scientific research. The system is to be brought into service in 1994.
