Next up, Memorex Telex is looking to slip in under Storage Technology Corp with a low-end automated tape library that it says gives all the advantages of tape automation to an area where it had previously been cost-prohibitive. The 5200 Automated Tape Library is designed specifically as an entry-level product, it has one robotic accessor and one tape controller and comes in under the 5400 and uses the same technology. Available in 15 configurations, it handles from 658 to 5,152 cartridge tapes and can be field-upgraded to the 5400. Shipping now, it costs from $242,538 for the model 10A to $480,602 for the 86A and all models will have IBM’s Enhanced Data Recording Capability standard.The company has also introduced a Mass Entry/Exit unit for the big brother 5400, which provides unattended loading of cartridge tapes, using magazines that handle up to 15 cartridges each. It consists of six input and six output stations to allow for full overlap of cartridge entry and ejection. A complete set of12 magazines is standard and more can be ordered. It is field-installable and adds $121,000 to the price of the 5400, out now.
