The net profit plunge of 85.2% to $92m on sales up 15.8% at $26,000m at Fujitsu Ltd reflected the consolidation of 340 wholly-owned subsidiaries and 20 companies in which Fujitsu has significant holdings, including ICL Plc, Amdahl Corp and Fanuc Ltd. By sector, on a consolidated basis, communications equipment was down 6% to $2,800m, computers were up 8.1% to $13,770m, while electronic devices were down 6.7% to $1,828m. Fujitsu attributed these results to decline in the demand for PABXs by Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp, slightly offset by increased shipments of small portable phones. Activity in the computer field saw decreases in purchases of terminal equipment by the depressed financial industry, but good orders of large mainframes. Exports were down overall by 11.4%, reflecting recession in the OEM disk business, particularly in the US, but 60% up in the computer field.
