Compaq Computer Corp has been hovering on the brink of the printer market for many months now, but it is still not ready with products, although yesterday it announced that it is creating a worldwide Peripherals Division to develop and market printers and related products. David Black, previously head of development of desktop and portable computers, was named vice-president and general manager of the new division, which will major on printers specifically designed for use on local area networks: print servers, effectively. Compaq says it has already been issued a number of patents on features it plans to incorporate into its first products, to be launched later on this year.
