If there is a silver lining to be found in the cloud created by that horrendous virus program that started eating the vitals of many of the computers on the giant Arpanet (CI No 1,052), it is that Arpanet, built by Bolt, Beranek & Mewman Inc and the pioneer of packet-switching technology, is specifically a research tool, and the people who use it not only now have a pressing interest in finding a permanent cure for the problem – which highlighted no fewer than three security flaws in the system according to the New York Times – but are better placed than most to get down to it.
