ARM Plc is moving up the chart for worldwide shipments of embedded processors, according to new research from the MicroDesign Resource Group. The company saw a five fold increase in shipments of its chips in 1998 and sold around 48 million units. Motorola still heads the top of the table with its 68k ColdFire series – shipping 83.3 million units. The RISC-based MIPS family is third with a total of 50 million chips shipped. Interestingly, IBM Corp’s embedded PowerPC chip has not seen the phenomenal interest it saw over the last couple of years after the chip was launched but resides mid-table having shipped around 5 million units – still a 40% growth on last year’s figures
