ARIES KILLS SPARC-POWERPC HYBRID AFTER PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS

The Fremont, California-based Aries Research Inc, which earlier this year (CI No 2,386) was suggesting that its days as a Sparc-only builder were numbered when it unveiled plans for a Sparc-PowerPC hybrid architecture, has taken a step back. The company says performance improvements delivered in SuperSparc II and UltraSparc made it change its mind and that it is now close to shipping a 50MHz upgrade to its Marixx SI server, plans offer HyperSparc systems and will offer an Sbus graphics board using the 3Dlabs Inc Glint chip in the New Year.
