Ariba revenue up 5% in Q2

Subscription and maintenance revenue grew 17% to $55m

Spend-management software vendor Ariba has reported a net loss of $4.7m for the second quarter 2009, against a loss of $12.4m in the year-ago quarter, on revenue up 5% at $85m.

It made an operating loss of $3.5m compared to a loss of $14.7m in the same period last year. Net loss per share was $0.06 compared to a net loss per share of $0.16 last year.

The company said it added 39 new customers during the quarter, and closed 11 transactions worth over $1m, including five software deals and 141 on-demand product deals. Its 12-month subscription software backlog grew 27% year-over-year to $128m. Net cash flow from operations was $16.3m, with cash and cash equivalents of $160m.

Subscription and maintenance revenue grew 17% to $55m, while services and other revenue fell 13% to $30m.

For the first half, it made a net loss of $1.3m compared to a loss of $31m in the year-ago half, on revenue up 8% at $171m. It made an operating loss of $5m compared to a loss of $36m last year.

Bob Calderoni, chairman and chief executive at Ariba, said: I believe this is a testament to the breadth and depth of our spend-management solutions. I am also pleased with the operational discipline that Ariba demonstrated this quarter. Although we face increased operating risk as a result of the economic downturn, we remain on track to achieve our financial targets for this fiscal year.
