High capacity 3.5 Winchester disk drives were out in force at Comdex last week, with the hottest-sounding property being introduced by Areal Technology Inc, Santa Clara. The company is offering a formatted 200Mb on a single sputtered glass platter, with 29mS average access time, 1W or less power consumption, and 100Mbits-per-square inch areal density, which compares with a previous maximum of 53Mbits from Maxtor Corp. The drive uses a rotary voice coil actuator, and an SCSI can be embedded. Available in the third quarter of next year, it will be $595 for 1,000-up with controller. The company also has 50Mb and 100Mb versions, with the 100Mb out first, in the first quarter 1989.
