Application development & deployment market to reach $80.6bn in 2012: report

The big three of Oracle, IBM and Microsoft are expected to maintain their dominance

By CBR Staff Writer

The application development and deployment (AD&D) software market is expected to reach $80.6bn in 2012, up 3.7% from 2011, according to a new report.

IDC’s forecast report revealed that the overall AD&D market has been moderate in 2012 due to slower than expected sales in the second half of the year. It is however expected to rebound to higher single-digit growth in 2013 and beyond.

The relational database management systems (RDBMS) market is expected to acquire 34% market share, which is currently led by Oracle, and is expected to outperform most AD&D markets with high single-digit growth during the years ahead.

Distributed Cache Services Managers market, which generated $228m during 2012, has been mainly responsible for highest forecast growth across AD&D markets, said the report.

IDC Application Development & Deployment research group vice president Stephen Hendrick said across the AD&D markets, higher growth is being experienced where markets are aligning with or supporting mobile, cloud, social, and big data areas. "We expect growth in these areas to remain strong across the entire 2012-2016 forecast period," Hendrick said.

Data Integration and Access Software (DIAS) generated revenues of about $4bn and is having as much growth as the RDBMS market, with IBM leading the market with 17.5%, followed by the SAS Institute and Informatica.

During the 2012-2016 forecast period, the Process Automation Middleware (PAM) market is expected to gain momentum as enterprises seek more efficient ways to develop and maintain mission critical applications.

According to the report, growth rates of end-user query, reporting, and analysis as well as advanced analytics have been high within the business intelligence market, and are expected to experience high single-digit growth in 2013 and beyond.

The AD&D market has been dominated three vendors, which includes Oracle, IBM, and Microsoft with a combined market share of 54.7%.
