APPLESHARE IP6 SUPPORTS WINDOWS ON SMB

By CBR Staff Writer

Apple Computer Inc has joined Berkeley Software Design Inc in announcing software running IPv6 (CI No 3,476). AppleShare IP 6.0 has new file sharing support for Windows clients through the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. That gives clients running Windows 95, 98 and NT native access to AppleShare IPv6 servers. The new software also supports IMAPv4 as a complement to more traditional POP and SMTP email servers. Apple has thrown in its Sherlock technology for server-side searches, and with expanded print server support for TCP/IP, Windows and Apple users can share a single printer. The company claims AppleShare IP 6.0 scales to support 500 simultaneous file server clients and 10,000 registered individual users in the database.
