Macintosh fans are beginning to pray that the company does buy Be Inc or license Be Inc because Apple Computer Inc’s operating system strategy is in such disarray. It is now in the charge of Ellen Hancock, who is saying that the first Copland plug-ins for System 7.5, code-named Harmony, will be out in January, and will integrate OpenDoc and the CyberDog suite of Internet tools into the operating system, and the release will also include a new Extension manager, LaserWriter driver and Installer. That’s the good news: the bad news is that not only will it not include the promised kernel, input-output systems and file system, but that Ms Hancock is saying that while these do still remain active projects they will not necessarily even be in Mac System 8.
