Apple Computer Inc duly announced its three faster Power Macs, the Power Macintosh 6100/66, 7100/80 and 8100/100, yesterday and says they are available today worldwide. The Mac 6100/66 is 30% faster than its predecessor, the 7100/80 is 40% faster and the 8100/100 is 28% faster. The 6100/66 costs $1,820 with 8Mb and 350Mb disk, and $2,030 with a CD-ROM drive as well. The 7100/80 is $2,900 with 8Mb and 500Mb, $3,240 with CD-ROM and $3,830 for the 16Mb, 700Mb disk CD-ROM audio-visual model. The 8100/100 follows the same configurations as the 7100/80 except for the disk, which is 700Mb on the base model, 1Gb on the others. Level 2 cache is added to the 6100/66 and 7100/80, adding 15% to performance on top of the gain from the faster clock. The company, which has already said it shipped 600,000 Power Macs from March to September, still has not updated the figure further.
