Apple Computer Inc will launch higher-power models to replace its current Power Macintosh line in January, MacWeek hears, and for Comdex/Fall has lined up a supercharged Power Mac powered by a 100MHz (or faster, production yields permitting) PowerPC 601 with an enormous capacity hard drive and all the RAM that market conditions will allow, but as a stop-gap yesterday changed all the current Power Mac configurations. The new models all offer the 256Kb level two cache option. The Power Mac 6100/60 8/160 now has a 250Mb disk, and the 16/250 a 350Mb for no extra charge. 8/250/CD configuration is cut by 11% and the 6100/60 AV 8/250 model is discontinued, replaced by an audio-visual upgrade board for the 6100/60 at less than $500. The three members of the 7100/66 with 250Mb disk now get 500Mb at little extra charge and the 7100/66AV 8/500/CD gets 8Mb more memory and a 7% price cut. The 8100/80 are cut up to 13%, and the 8/250 becomes an 8/500 at no extra charge. The 8100/80 16/500 model with Insignia Solutions Inc’s SoftWindows is expected to be discontinued.
